Uganda Police Foil Another Bomb Attack In Kampala

KAMPALA, Uganda - Ugandan police foiled yet another bomb attack in the capital Kampala late Monday, following a tip off from the management of a popular hangout spot in a city suburb, police said late Monday.

The Ugandan police cordoned off several entertainment joints and pubs in Makindye and recovered a device which had been abandoned in a bag at one of the bars known as Makindye House. Security sources say the bag containing explosives was abandoned at the bar late Sunday evening and management alerted the police after it wasn't claimed for several hours.

"A cell phone kept ringing from the bag and when an attendant opened the bag, the phone was attached to several wires," said a security source.

Security officials say the explosive was a homemade bomb and could have exploded if anyone had attempted to answer the cell phone. The Police Anti-Terrorism Unit later detonated the bomb at around 6.30 a.m. local time (330 GMT).

The attack comes is the latest to unsettle the country after three blasts rocked the city late Sunday, claiming an estimated 76 people and injuring several others, according to health and police officials. The attacks targeted crowds who were watching the World Cup finals, mainly in hangouts popular with tourists.

According to Fred Opolot, a Ugandan government spokesman, at least two people have been arrested in connection with the incident and police are continuing with investigations.

The Ugandan police chief, Kale Kayihura, told reporters late Monday that police had received intelligence information that Al shabaab insurgents were planning terrorist attacks against people watching World Cup football matches in Uganda.

"We were very cautious because we had known that the terrorists wanted to hit during the World Cup celebrations. Unfortunately, we didn't know where and when the attacks were to be carried out," he was quoted as saying by the privately-owned newspaper, the Daily Monitor.
