Obama announces solar panel initiative

US president Barack Obama has told listeners to his weekly radio and online address that a new plan to keep industry in the US would partly involve solar energy.

Mr Obama said two companies would initially receive funds to create more than 2,000 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent jobs.

They are Abengoa Solar, which will build one of the world's largest solar plants in Arizona, and Abound Solar Manufacturing, which is building plants in Colorado and Indiana.

In announcing the funds, the president said: "We're going to keep competing aggressively to make sure the jobs and industries of the future are taking root right here in America."

Employers in the US slashed payrolls last month, driven by the expected end of 225,000 temporary census jobs.
